Cloud computing does not spell the end for IT staff

The growing popularity of cloud computing in the service management market will not mean redundancies for in-house IT staff, according to a major advocate of the new technology.

Simon May champions cloud-based services on behalf of Microsoft and claims that the advances in IT support services do not mean in-house IT jobs will become redundant. He claims that IT staff will still be necessary to help users navigate what he calls the ‘technology jungle.’ Mr May also claims that in-house staff will be needed in the transitional period whilst firms adopt a cloud computing approach.

Speaking at a seminar on the subject last month, May told IT workers: “It doesn’t matter if you work for one of the major vendors or are out there in the field for an organisation, what you provide is a localised level of intelligence that tailors a solution to the customer’s emerging needs.”

May added that he thinks there will always be a place for IT workers in offices to help “guide the gatekeeper”. He added that new technologies are emerging so frequently that IT staff are needed to ensure other employees can hone their skills to allow them to make use of the new services.
