IT support should allow for personal laptops says expert

A growing number of firms have reported a trend for workers using their personal laptops to access corporate resources. As a result of this, calls are being made to increase the amount of IT support offered to these workers.

Forrester Research questioned more than 500 US and European firms about the issues and found that more than 20 per cent report a significant rise in the number of employees using their Apple notebook devices at work. On top of this, some 41 per cent of the businesses questioned said they block all access to corporate resources for Mac users.

David Johnson, a senior analyst at Forrester Research said that this refusal to allow staff to access company resources through their own devices can lead to “bootlegging.”

Mr Johnson added that workers often prefer to use their own devices: “They’re drawn to uncluttered Macs, especially those with solid-state drives, which are more responsive and boot in seconds.” He added that work laptops are often “saddled with management, backup, and security agents that can bog down a PC.”

Adopt IT Support Service

Mr Johnson suggested that businesses adopt an IT support service that can lead to the creation of an environmental where staff can use their own devices and sort their own IT issues. He added that a “Laissez-Faire” approach to IT support is “what the successful companies are doing”.
